Re: wills
The answer also depends on how many creditor claims were made and the form the assets are in, along with the efficiency of the Executor/Administrator and/or attorney.
Re: wills
There are several factors that determine how long it takes to determine assets after someone dies.
If they have a trust there is no need for probate.
If they have a will the amount of property to be distributed under the will determines how complicated the probate will be and the minimum times for probates. Probate gets progressively more complex for estates of $20,000 with no real estate, for estates of $100,000 and then for estates of more than $200,000.
Aside from the delays of probate the successor trustee or executor may have instructions from the trust or will to do certain things that delay distribution, such as selling property which can take a long time.
In addition, there are sometimes will contests or trust contests that delay things.
