hearing on the merits
i received a notice from district court saying that a hearing on the merits has been scheduled for the above case.what does this mean and who requested this.its an old collection case two years back

You have been sued; if you do not appear and contest the matter you will be defaulted and the creditor will have a judgment against you and will have a number of options to collect from you that they do not now have.
Whatever you do, don't ignore.
Depending upon the amount of debt, you may want to get a lawyer.
