responding to telephone call from law office

I have received a telephone call from ''alledgedly'' law office of Goodwin and Bryan (spelling?). They say to call them back at 1-800-223-4969 ext 5281. I did that two days ago and Ira said they called my number by mistake and that they did not have any issue with me based on my telephone number and addres. I said thank you thinking it over.

Today the same message was left on my answering machine. I called back and as soon as the automated voice said this call would be recorded, I told the person I was speaking that I was recording this call. Quickly I was switched to a supervisor who said he would not give me permission to record the conversation. I asked what the purpose of the call and the business of the law firm and received, no one here will let you record the conversation. I hung up.

I immediately called back and went through the same drill. same nasty response.

I had thought I wanted to find out what they were calling about but not unless I can tape record it.

What can I do? Is there a state or federal agency I can contact? help?

N. H. Rev. Stat. Ann. � 570-A:2: It is a felony to intercept, or disclose the contents of, any telecommunication or oral communication without the consent of all parties. However, it is a misdemeanor for a party to a communication, or anyone who has the consent of only one of the parties, to intercept a telecommunication or oral communication.

Civil damages are expressly authorized for unlawful interceptions for the greater of actual damages, $100 a day for each day of violation, or $1,000 in addition to punitive damages, attorney fees and litigation costs. N.H. Rev. Stat. Ann. � 570-A:11.

If you do not want to speak with the firm, simply write them a letter directing that all communications with you be in writing; send it certifed mail with a return receipt. If the firm calls you again and they are a debt collector or acting on behalf of any party attempting to collect a debt, you have a basis to file suit against them. If you don't want that number to be able to call you, contact the phone company and see about having the number blocked.
