Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Hampshire

Arrest Warrant in Vermont

I currently live in NH. I just found out that I have a warrant for my arrest in Vermont. I was told that the warrant was only extradicted in the state of Vermont. Does that mean that the state of NH can come and arrest me right now and ask me to waive extradiction to Vermont? Or does it only mean that until I get pulled over for speeding or something else that they can then arrest me and extradicte me to Vermont???

Re: Arrest Warrant in Vermont

I'm not sure what you mean by "the warrant was only extradicted in the state of Vermont."

Depending on how Vermont has classified the warrant, you can be arrested on a Vermont warrant in the State of New Hampshire -- either by them coming to get you or if you have police contact for some other reason, such as getting pulled over for speeding, as you say) If Vermont signals to New Hampshire that the warrant is serious enough that they want you held, you can be held on bail pending extradition (aka rendition) to Vermont. This would be a miserable experience as Vermont has a reasonable period of time to come get you and undoubtedly they won't be in a rush. The best thing to do is to turn yourself in directly to the police department in Vermont that has issued the warrant. If you can afford legal representation you should hire an attorney to shepherd you through the process. Otherwise, if the charge is serious enough, you will have an attorney appointed to represent you by the court in Vermont.
