Assuming it is truly a (class A) misdemeanor, the maximum possible penalty is one year in jail and a $2,000 fine. However, please be aware that if the defendant has two prior theft convictions, what would otherwise be a misdemeanor can be charged as a felony, regardless of the value of the items taken.
