Legal Question in Family Law in New Hampshire
Adult Adoption
My stepfather lives in NH and I live in TX. We have been trying to find a way for me to be legally adopted. His attorney said that in New Hampshire the child must be a resident of the state. (I haven't been able to verify if this is true.) And Texas law requires that the Petitioner be a resident. Is there anything we can do?

Re: Adult Adoption
You do not indicate if the "child" is of legal age. Adult adoptions might be a bit easier. The general rule is that the court must have jurisdiction of both the subject matter and the parties. If both parties are not resident in NH, it presents a difficult situation. At a minimum I think you would have to come to NH for some period of time. I would need more facts and would have to conduct some research in more depth.

Move and then move back. Just make sure you stay long enough to qualify and you have "the necessary intent to stay" to qualify for legal residency.
