What advice would you give to a single mother trying to settle everything with the father outside of court?

My short answer would be don't do it! Without a court order there is significant risk to both of you and your child. Obtaining a court order does not have to be a contested matter. The two of you, preferably with the assistance of attorneys, can negotiate an agreement which, in most cases, may be filed with the court without the need for a formal hearing.
