Legal Question in Insurance Law in New Hampshire

do insurance companies negotiate for settlements?

I am 40 years old. I was in a car accident last winter. I was not at fault. The car was totalled and I received a check for it.

My hand was fractured in the accident. It is pretty much healed - only aches when it gets cold outside. All doctor bills were paid for.

Now - my question is - the insurance company called me yesterday to settle the claim on my hand. They offered me $4000. Is that good? I don't have a clue. I don't know if they negotiate or not. I'm not sure how to go about this. If I had been seriously injured, I would have retained a lawyer, but...

Thanks for your help.

Re: do insurance companies negotiate for settlements?

More information is needed about your injury and you personally to determine a fair settlement. You are entitled to lost wages, medical bills, even though they were paid by health insurance, and something for pain and suffering.

By all means, absolutely talk to a lawyer before agreeing to anything.

Insurance adjusters have a range for settlement in any case. A good adjuster who wants to keep his job will try to settle cases on the low end. It is up to the attorney to convince the adjuster to settle on the high side or face the possibility of expensive litigation.
