Return of Security Deposit

I am in the state of NH and the law here states that security deposits must be returned within 30 days of termination of tenancy (In my case March 31st) . I believe this means that I am due the return of my deposit on or by April 30th, is this correct? Is so, what is my next step if on the 30th I don't have my deposit returned. Is ther anything that I can do? Thank you in advance for your help.

Your basic statement is true. The landlord is required to either refund the security deposit or provide you with a written statement as to what items have been debited from the secuirty deposit and refund the balance, if any. Not all leases are subject to this rule, however. I would need to examine the lease and type of tenancy to ensure that your particular situation falls within this statutory scheme.

Perhaps you should write to the landlord requesting the refund of the deposit. If you do not get a reasonable response, you are entitled to file suit in the District Court where the landlord resides.

As with all legal matters, there are many factors which may impact an answer. I urge that you consult with a lawyer who can examine all the facts and circumstances of your case.
