Legal Question in Personal Injury in New Hampshire

Dog bite law?

I was bitten badly in the face by a dog when I was 8. My parents never did anything about it, they were afraid of what the dog owner would do. I know there is a statute of limitations, but is there one for when the child was a minor but is now an adult?

Re: Dog bite law?

Generally, in NH the law is that you must start a civil action to claim damages within 3 years of the event, or from when you knew who did what to cause you harm. However, there are exceptions. You might still be able to start a civil claim if you are within 3 years of the date you turned adult. Even then, there are still practical difficulties bringing a claim this late: can you find and serve papers on the dog owner; can you assemble proof of what happened; can you gather the medical records; can you establish insurance coverage for the dog owner (very important if you have any hope of actually collecting serious money), etc.

If you wish, you can contact me and we can discuss your details.
