Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New Hampshire
Can a lien be put on my home?
I currently have a mortgage on my home. My boyfriend & I are thinking of re-mortgaging the home in both of our names. He is divorced, and had a forclosure on his last house due to his ex filing bankruptcy. The foreclosure happened in 2000 and still shows on his credit report as transferred to another. If we do this, can the house get a lien against it since the 2nd mortgage was not paid? If I do this with him, can anything happen to me financially?
Thank you

Re: Can a lien be put on my home?
If you re-finance with you boyfriend and add his name to the deed, you will be inheriting his debts and may end up with a lien against your home to pay off any monies he owed on his last home. In short, this is a BAD idea.
If you two are living together, he can contribute in the form of RENT (be sure he gets a Rent receipt every month) to protect your property. If you end up getting married, talk to an Attorney before the wedding to plan for the financial consequences. It was wise of you to look into this ahead of time, please do not end up like the dozens (literally) of clients who have acted without thinking this through. Best of Luck.
