Bear in mind, however, that there are generally administrative procedures for everything. Without knowing more, it is unclear whether the town has taken action to abandon part of your road, whether it had been maintaining a private road and no longer intends to do so, or whether it had been maintaining a lesser public road and is no longer maintaining its full extent.

Perhaps the first thing to do, if you haven't already, is inquire of the town why they have taken the action, and on what legal basis.
