Hello ..

I am looking into changing my first name ..

Here is a little bit of info ,,to help out my questions..

I was not born here in the USA I was adopted in another country came to America when I was around 2 years old . I was adopted by American parents and I became a united states citizen soon after .

I am now 41 years old and have always wanted to change my first name as I never liked it .

My question is ..

1 - do you think the judge will have a problem with me wanting to change my name because I was not born in the USA ?

2 - Will I have to change my will ?

3 - do I have to put an ad in the news paper to let the pubic know my name change ?

I ask the lady at the court and she said she is not aloud to give any legal advice so I hope you can help me out .

I can not be specific, but can provide some information. As an adult, it is generally an easy process to change your name. The forms are available at the courthouse. You will need a certified copy of your birth certificate and likely the adoption paperwork.

1. A judge has a wide discretion in granting changes of name. However, there does not appear to be any reason in your message indicating that it would present a problem (assuming you're not trying to dodge criminal charges or evade taxes or creditors.)

2. YES. Not only should you change your will, you need to notify all credit agencies, the Social Security Administration, all creditors, bank accounts, retirement accounts, your employer, driver license, etc.

3. it is not likely, but the judge, as noted, has wide discretion as to publication of notice.

As with all personal legal matters, you may determine that it is worthwhile to hire an attorney who can move this process forward on your behalf.
