Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New Hampshire

My grandmother's executor, a lawyer, seems to keep dragging the settlement out after my grandmother's death. He held back $1000 for taxes, so that he could close escrow, then didn't close escrow and told us he needed to wait for the taxes to be done. Then he tells us that it will be another month, then 2 more months. Any time we ask him for a status he bills us for more time from the escrow account. I get the feeling that he is dragging his feet so he can just keep collecting more from our inquiries. This is in New Hampshire. She passed over a year ago, and had only a couple of small debts to pay off. How long does the lawyer have before he needs to close this out? What should my next steps be.?

A final account may be filed with the court no sooner than 6 months from the date of the Executor's appointment to office. In many cases, that is enough time. In other cases there are items which require more time to complete. In any event, an Executor must file at least a first account after one year from the date of appointment. Each case is fact specific. You may wish to obtain a second opinion from another attorney as to the status of the case.
