Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

Who pays for blood test

My fiancee recently found out that he may have a three year old son that he was never told about. We would like to know for sure so we'd like the child tested. The mother is currently going through court for her other two children, because of being an unfit mother. Help! Do we have to pay for the blood testing?

Re: Who pays for blood test

Thank you for your e-mail concerning paternity issues for your fiancee. I suggest that the cost of the blood test is extremely small in contrast to the child support exposure that he will be paying for the rest of the child's life, if he is determined to be the father. There is no attorney-client relationship formed by this reply. I strongly suggest that your fiancee consult with an attorney to discuss all of the issues that may be raised by paternity testing. (Your e-mail does not indicate that there is any Court Order compelling this testing.) Our firm has attorneys that can provide guidance and representation. Please call 856-795-6700 to schedule an appointment with one of our Family Law attorneys. Good luck to you. K. Scheiner

Re: Who pays for blood test

Please be advised that I have not been retained to represent you and I am basing this response on the limited amount of information supplied. However, the cost of the blood test is minimal cost. If the Court has Ordered your fiance to undergo testing, the government "may" or "may not" pick up the cost. It depends on the local Court policy. If you wish to discuss this or any other issue in greater detail, please feel free to contact me at 908-537-7975.
