Legal Question in Banking Law in New Jersey

An African Bank Wants to Give me Money!!!!!

On Monday, December 10, I received an unsolicited e-mail from a gentleman who works for Prudential Business Transactions in South Africa. THe e-mail stated that there was a bank account that had not had any activity on it since 1990. After some investigation, the bank concluded that the account holder had died and that he had no next of kin for his money to pass to.

The gentleman made it seem like anyone could now claim this money. I replied and he wrote back saying all I needed to do to claim this money was to submit a letter saying I was the account holders next of kin, even though I never knew the man, and the bank would transfer the money to my account.

My question is: Is this legal? How can I lay claim to this money? Is it a scam to extract money from my bank account?

Thank you for your help!

This is a scam. Don't go near it.
