Legal Question in Bankruptcy in New Jersey
Working for the State
Four years ago, I was married to an abusive alcoholic and when I lost my full-time job of fifteen years, I filed for bankruptcy. Since then, I got my life together. I got divorced (thank God!) and am now re-married to a wonderful, supportive spouse. I graduated from college with high honors with a Bachelor's Degree in Business. I want to become a teacher and my husband says he will pay my way! I'm 35 years old. Here's my question:
Can I collect a paycheck from NJ or any other state even though I filed for bankruptcy 4 years ago? I really want to teach, but am worried this will hold me back from becoming a teacher. Please answer my question. Thanks.

Re: Working for the State
It is illegal to discriminate in employment due to filing bankruptcy. I have represented many state and federal employees in my practice - some who were having their wages garnisheed due to old student loans; others whose employers we were required to notify of the bankruptcy because they were taxing authorities, and no one said anything.
I can't imagine it would ever be a problem, but if it is, we'll sue! You go, girl, and God bless you.
