Legal Question in Business Law in New Jersey

Bride signs a contract with a wedding hall to cater her event and bride leaves a deposit to hold the date. Bride changes her mind and wants to cancel the contract the next day. She wants her deposit back as the wedding hall is no longer holding the date but they won't return it until the date is rebooked by another bride. Is this unjust enrichment and how does the bride know that the hall is making a good faith effort to rebook? Can the contract be canceled?

The bride has a fight on her hands, but is not just stuck with losing the deposit. I would find out all of the facts, and see whether you can do this without having to sue the wedding hall. If you have to sue them, then you do!

I am sure there is a written contract, but I have not seen it. Many such contracts have similar provisions on cancellations and, to some degree, you need to rely on the integrity of the hall as to whether or not it was booked. This may require litigation, and the facts are skimpy. No dates are provided, in particular, how far out was the date of the event, in relation to the calncellation.
