Legal Question in Business Law in New Jersey
copyright laws
I have a student who wishes to sell as a fundraiser a recipe book filled with recipes from teachers in her school. Some teachers have submitted recipes from books, magazines, etc. Are there copyright laws that prohibit the use of these recipes in another publication?

Re: copyright laws
Material like this is almost always copyrighted so your student should proceed with caution. Though it's unlikely that the small distribution would come to the attention of one whose copyright had been violated and if so, that the matter would be pursued given the 'good cause' involved, it would still be a violation. Many publishers and owners of copyrighted material readily consent to the reprinting of their material under circumstances such as these. Writing to each to obtain such permission makes the student's job more cumbersome but it's the best way to go. Good luck to you and your student.
