Legal Question in Business Law in New Jersey
Drivers license written on checks
We are getting several customers checks returned a week for inssuficient funds, account closed and no such account. It's getting to the point that we maynot be able to take a personal check at all! I therefore told my service technicians and managers, when a customer wants to pay by a personal check we would require a drivers license number written on the check. (this helps if I should have to take them to municipal court)
One of our staff said he thought it was illegal for us to copy the persons license and write it on their check? ''That we can not write on the customers check''
I don't want to say ''write the D.L.N. on all checks'' if I am going to get our company in trouble!
Thanks :)

Re: Drivers license written on checks
Many businesses use driver's licenses as identify verification and write the number on the check (usually under the person's name). I am not aware that this has been ruled to be illegal by a court.
