Legal Question in Business Law in New Jersey
How to file a claim against out of state client?
I live in NJ. I designed a website for a
client in CT. He paid a 50% deposit.
I did exactly what he asked for. Even
made 20+ hours of requested
revisions. Never hinted he was
unhappy with the design.
After doing his small list of revisions,
exactly as he asked for he has
demanded a refund. He doesn't like
any of it.
I want to go after him for the
balance. Before he comes after me
for the deposit.

Although the transaction may sound simple, the explanation of your legal rights and available strategies is too complex for a short answer. To be conclusory: don't sue him, wait for him to sue you in NJ and counterclaim. Register a copyright in what you have delivered ASAP. Then, notify a lawyer who understands business intellectual property issues to notify the client that he can't use your work. In parallel, modify your contract and business procedures so this doesn't happen again.
