Legal Question in Business Law in New Jersey

Is it illegal to pursue a former employer's clients? I have email addresses of these clients, which I obtained completely legally.

After the employment relationship has ended, it is not unlawful to solicit business from an employer's clients unless there is a non-compete agreement in effect. Many key employees are asked to sign a non-compete agreement as a condition of employment. These are enforced by the courts if they are reasonable. If you did not sign such an agreement, you can solicit these former clients. In doing this, be sure that you are not using your former employer's confidential information. If you do, you may be liable for misappropriation of this information even without an agreement.

It depends on a couple of things, most important being whether you have a signed agreement that says that you the employee can not go after the former employer's customers. And you can not use confidential information (info that is not publicly available).

Let me know if I can help you. You want to set this up to avoid future problems.
