This may be a scam. Our business has routinely received "invoices" from companies claiming we ordered goods and services which we did not.

Often the companies sound like other legitimate companies with whom we have had dealings.

Neither your boss nor you should pay and instead report it to the Division of Consumer Affairs.

Your boss is an idiot. No, you are not responsible. You are not responsible to the thieves who are trying to steal your boss' money, and you are certainly not responsible to your boss.

Unless your boss apologizes and promises never to do it again, I suggest you think about finding someone to work for who does not do such stupid, offensive things. It sounds like he may be trying to force you to leave, but that is just a guess.

While my response may not be as harsh as Robert's, I totally agree with him. This was a scam, as it appears, and your boss has fallen for it. You should question him as to why he feels he should comply with an obvious scam. If he deducts any money from your wages, you should report him to the NJ Labor Department, as well as reconsider your remaining in his employ. As an aside, I am curious as to the firm that duped you, as I am a Consumer Affairs officer, on a volunteer basis, and would like to see if any of the resident businesses in my area, have been similarly bilked. The ad company is running a variation on a very old scam. Your employer is foolish to pay anything. However, regardless of what your employer chooses to do, you are not responsible. If any action is taken against you in the employment context, report it first to the NJ Dept. of Labor. If that doesn't fully resolve your problem, you can come back here and one of us will let you know if you have a further cause of action. Remember that you may also have a direct right to sue the ad company if you are injured by their fraud.
