Legal Question in Business Law in New Jersey
who has liability for expenses on an unfilled IT contract
I am a IT contractor and was given a signed to a contract by an IT recruiting firm for 6 mon. I moved to the contract location and signed 6 mon leases for rent and furniture. Now, the contract abruptly ended after 8 working days and I was terminated with 2 wks. notice. The reason given was that the client decided to move in a different direction. Work was never started. I now find myself with $1800.00 in debt having to break the rent (apt. and furniture) leases. Who is liable for this

What did the contract say about early termination?

A lot has to do with the specifics of the contract or contracts that are involved. Normally, contracts don't just "abruptly end". It is possible that your contract had a termination clause that permitted your employer to get out. Even if it did, it is possible that you might have a cause of action against either the employer, the recruiter, or both. Again, a lot depends on the specifics.
If you call, I can possibly help you find out whether you have a claim. Remind me that the contact was through Lawguru and the first consultation will be free.
