You need to file a certificate of amendment with NJ to change the business name, and can do so here: http://www.state.nj.us/treasury/revenue/dcr/pdforms/c113a.pdf.

When you have the stamped as filed amendment of articles an officer of the organization should call the IRS Exempt Organizations unit to request an updated exemption determination letter and the IRS will ask for a copy of the amendment. There is no charge for that

Re: Non-Profit Corporation Name Change

First, you should check on the IRS web site (irs.gov) for lists of exempt organizations to make sure there is not another group with your new name. Then you can file a Certificate of Amendment with New Jersey. Finally, you should notify the IRS.

Frankly, why don't you have a good tax attorney familiar with Non-Profits representing you. Not-for-profit organizations frequently have many legal issues which are not recognized or simply ignored. Your attorney could do the name change and help you with your ongoing issues and planning.

I hope this helps!
