Legal Question in Business Law in New Jersey

Posting information from the newspaper

I own an online classified website. We make our money by customers placing a listing and paying for that service. In order to jump start the business , I would like to duplicate some ads for garage sales from the local newspaper on our website. Is this legal to do? I think it would be a benefit, since the person basically get a free ad on our website.

Thanks

Re: Posting information from the newspaper

Since you are not authorized to place the ad, I suggest you contact the homeowner and offer the service, just to get their permission. You can indicate its a "freebe" and have them wrie authorization or use e-mail.

The newspaper is copyrighted, including the classified advertisements. Therefore, you cannot copy them. Nevertheless, you can call the advertisers and offer an advertisemnt on your site.
