A franchise attorney will say you need to file appropriate doing business documents in the state(s) where you do business. You may also need to file similar documents in the state where you reside, depending on the statute. Consult with a good business or franchise attorney in your area for specific advice.

The answer is based upon the type of business you have. If it is an actual physical location, then you must register your limited liability company in the state where the business is located. If you registered in your home state, you have to file also in the state where you are doing business. That would simply increase your expense.

If your business is an online business or does not have a physical store or office location you could be much more flexible. You need to talk with a tax and business attorney to help plan the correct location for your business and to help you form the business properly to minimize the long run tax and filing expenses.

I hope this helps!
