Legal Question in Business Law in New Jersey

Small business

What to do when you own a small business and one of your customers passes away and still owes you money? I'm not sure if this is even the correct place to ask this but any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have read the answer from Attorney John Corbett, and he is right on point. If you need an attorney and you are near Philadelphia, contact him.

If you are in northern NJ, contact me!

Call if you like; I never charge for a first phone call.

You can then decide how you would like to proceed.

My contact information can be obtained from the links below, just click on the Attorney Profile link. Let my secretary know you found me through LawGuru.

The debt becomes a debt of the estate. At a minimum, you should try to find out who will wind up the decedent's affairs and make your claim known. Try to find out whether the estate will be formally administered and who will be the decedent's personal representative. If the debt is large, you should probably consult a lawyer. There are many different ways that a matter such as you raise can play out and you will improve your chances of collection with good representation.
