The police will probably not investigate as this is a commercial, not criminal matter. You should contact the New York Secretary of State's office to see if they are conducting any investigations of this agency or can offer you some assistance in recovering your money. Alternatively, if the agency was located in New York City, the City's Department of Consumer Affairs might be able to assist you. If you cannot obtain assistance from the government agencies, you can retain an attorney to file a suit to recover your money.

I agree with what the other lawyer wrote. Let me add:
-You may want to file a criminal complaint with the local police. I am not sure about jurisdiction, but you may want to do that.
It may make sense to have a lawyer talk to you, and plan out a sensible way to try to get your money back. Of course, you do not want to spend a lot of money to get back $6000.00, but you want to take action, and sooner not later.
