Legal Question in Business Law in New Jersey
Several years ago a friend asked me to do an engine rebuild for his corvette. I have been asking him to pay me the money he owes for the past several years and he keeps telling me that he will pay the money he owes but never shows up with the promised cash. At this point it is doubtful that he will ever pay the money he owes me. The work was done at my home garage and my question is can I obtain a mechanics lean on the vehicle until he pays the money owed.

You may have several problems, including whether you qualify for a "business" entitled to the protection of the Act as well as a statute of limitation barrier if all this transpired "several years" ago. I'd need more information to address your question meaningfully. Please feel free to contact me ASAP so that we may explore your options and protect your legal rights. 973-921-0600.
Kindly note and remember that my response is merely a general comment on the law related to your question, and NOT legal advice or opinion. Also, your question and my response does NOT create an attorney-client relationship between us. You cannot rely upon what I have written, because I do not have all of the information that I need to advise you or render an opinion. Even simple facts you have not shared can completely change my answer. For me to give you legal advice or opinion, you would need to hire me to be your lawyer, and then we would need to discuss this in detail and go over the documents.

As a Franchise Attorney I agree entirely with the other attorney answer. Your home garage and whether you are a licensed auto mechanic is one issue. The other is liens need to be filed in a timely manner, and if you waited "several years," it's probably too little, too late. Consult with a good business or franchise attorney in your area for specific advice.
