Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in New Jersey

Am I Liable for Slander

As I Subcontractor I was

subjected to long delays in being

supplied equipment to install, the

wrong equipment being supplied

numerous times, lost work due to

poor scheduling, and general

incompetence by the Contractor.

I may have said some things to

the owner of the house out

of frustration such as the

contractor doesn't know what he

is doing, never supplies the

correct equipment, etc. Am I

liable for slander?

Opinion is absolutely protected under the first amendment. Thats what it sounds like you were doing, giving an opinion or venting. If you were not making a statement that was intended to be takem as fact you have a defensible position.

However, if you are sued, do not ignore it. Send it to your insurance company first, and if you have no coverage, retain counsel.

Not if you were being truthful or if you were expressing a statement based upon opinion but not verifiable facts. There may be other issues involved though.

Should you like to discuss this or any other legal matter, you can e-mail me for more information about low cost face-to-face, on-line, or a telephone consultation with a lawyer in our office.
