Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in New Jersey

hi me and my sister were caught shoplifting (no police were involved) and were told we are going to get a letter in the mail to pay a specific fee not more then $100. the first letter we recevied said we have to pay $150. we asked a lawyer about paying this fee and they told us not to pay because if we did we would just get more letters in the mail. we got a second and third letter and the amount is getting higher and we are not able even to pay part of it. what should we do and will this go on our record?wll it cause us problems if we dont pay like jail?please help us. thank you

It is difficult to answer your question without finding out what the letter said. It is important to understand who sent the letter to you, what the dollar amount is for, and whether they explained why the amounts were going up.

Regardless of what the letter says, unless the store presses charges this will not show up on your records. Also it is highly unlikely that you will get jail time for failing to pay unless you are violating a court order to pay.
