Legal Question in Construction Law in New Jersey

Customer will not pay final amount due

I have constructed a bathroom for a customer. The customer and I had a verbal agreement of the amount prior to the work start.During the construction process not one objection or complaint was stated. When the work was completed the customer stopped payment on the final check. She stated that there was a small hairline scratch on a mirror and that she was not happy with the quality of some of the work, mostly painting finishes. How do I get paid for this project?. I live in N.Y. and the customer is in N.J. . The check appeared to have cleared and then 3 weeks later my bank reversed the amount in my account ? I noticed a negative balance on my account and have incurred fee`s. Do I start with a lawyer ? small claims ?
