Legal Question in Consumer Law in New Jersey
I helped a friend by co-signing with her on a car purchase. The car title is under her name. She just passed away and the car company is telling me I am now resposible for the payments even though she got a debt cancellation agreement. They are telling us it was only if the car was a total loss, not if she passed away.

More likely the cancellation agreement was based on a life insurance provision that the seller failed to fund. Demand a copy of the agreement. If that doesn't work, there may be ways to force the issue. See: http://info.corbettlaw.net/cosign.htm
