Legal Question in Consumer Law in New Jersey
My husbands mother (my mother-in-law) died 10/9/08. She left a credit card bill with a $6000.00 debt on it. We jsut assumed the bill and took over the payments because we thought that is what we were supposed to do. My friend said the credit card company should wipe the slate clean and cancel her card. We are afraid to tell them she died because they might demand the entire debt from us right then and there. We cannot afford even paying this off. We have nothing in the bank and she left nothing to us either.
Do we approach the credit card company?

I assume she did not have an estate of consequence. Send a death certificate to the credit card companly and forget about the debt. IT WAS HER DEBT, unless you or your husband were on the application for the credit card.
