liability of recycling plant

A member of my household mistakenly put a bog containing library books out for recycling and they were taken. I called the recycling center the next day and I told what had happened and they said that they would search for them. I was also told that they would not have taken library books. I called again to check on the request and anoather person said that the supervisor did not know about this and that I should speak to the supervisor and I did and she said that she would check to see if they were there. I called again on Mon. and spoke to a male and he said ''Oh, they're gone.'' I then asked to speak to the manager of the facility and explsined what had happened and he told me other people had lost diamond rings and they hadn't been able to find them. I asked him if they had any liability for picking up something that they shouldn't have and he said no. Is he correct? Can I get them to pay for the books?

I would think not. You voluntarily placed them with recycling, they had a right to assume that they were. There would not be a reasonable theory of liability for your loss that I can envision. Sorry, but I think that this is a lost cause.
