Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

Someone borrowed money and now they have disappeared

My girlfriend has borrowed money from me with written and verbal promise to repay the loan, now she is my ex-girlfriend, and has disappeared from sight, she wrote me a check for some of it, and now the check and the signed promisory note are missing, I have unsigned copies of this note, she has moved with no forwarding address or phone number change. This has occued within the last 2 weeks. I have sent her a certified letter about repayment and am going to send the same letter in an e-mail tomorrow. I have asked the police if this is a crime and they said it is a civil matter. Part of the money is my personal money and the other part is from cash advances on my credit cards. Any suggestions as what I should do next? Can I write this off as a bad debt on my taxes? Should I take a loan throught my bank so I don't pay the HIGH interest rates? What should I do to catch this person?

If you wish to, you could hire an attorney to investigate, locate her, sue her and then try to force payment of the judgment. If she has no money, then you will have a difficult time getting paid.
