Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

How to collect judgement

I won a judgement of $1o,ooo against a contractor

that did faulty work to my home. I also got the

contractor on consumer fraud. I sued him

personally as well as his business.I was told

that on the charge of consumer fraud that the

person would be liable even if the business went

bankrupt. shortly after I won my judgement the

contractor was sentenced to 7 years in jail for

fraud to a roofing company he worked for.my

question is can I still collect my money when he

gets out of jail in 7 yrs, and can I get intrest

on the original amt. also can I get the money

from his family,ie,his wife or sister?

Re: How to collect judgement

Docketed judgments are good for 20 years and are enforceable only against the persons who were named as the defendant(s) in your law suit. Your main difficulty, however, from a practical standpoint, is whether or not the guy has anything. In my experience, many prisoners do not have assets. In any case, you can certainly attempt to collect on the judgment even while he is in jail. If you want to speak with me about this, feel free to call me at 856-546-8010. Good luck.
