Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

College Debt Collection

My daughter in law was contacted by EMCC collection agency to pay what they say she still owed on her college account ($500). The school closed 12 years ago and they bought the debt. She only went there 2 years and transferred to another school in 1993 She insists that before her transcripts could be transferred she had to pay the balance on her account and does not owe anything, however, she doesn't have any paperwork to back this up since it was so long ago. A law firm has now sent a letter stating they have filed a judgement against her in the NJ Superior Court. Is she liable for this debt and is there a statute of limitations on debt collection?

Re: College Debt Collection

I have been representing businesses filing lawsuits to collect debts since 1987, and representing people who are being sued since before that. What you are describing does not make sense. There is some information missing.

If this is only $500, then you have to decide whether it is worth talking to an attorney or not. A lawyer would have to look at all of your papers, and try to find out what else is going on here.

If you would like me to assist, please call my office. I am in Hackensack. A half hour consultation will be $75.00. You can then decide how you would like to proceed.

My contact information can be obtained from the links below, just click on the Attorney Profile link. Let my secretary know you found me through LawGuru.
