Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

credit card

my exwife opened a credit card with discover in 1990 in my name. They closed the account in 1992 with a balance of $3,600. I was divorced the same year. A collection agency called me today and asked how I expected to pay this. I told them I would get back to them. Am I responsible after 15 years? Is there any time limit on debt collection? This was opened in my name only this was not a joint account. Thanks for the help

Re: credit card

They are well over the statute of limitations and if you were just an authorized signor, you should not be responsible. I suggest you check your credit report and give me a call if you have any other problems.

Re: credit card

I have read what Jef wrote, and as usual, he is right on.

If they sued you and took a judgment years ago, then they may be able to force you to pay. You would have to find this out.

Get your credit report first.

You could call me if you like, after you do that. Good luck to you.
