Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey
credit card summons
I have a credit card with a $2,500.00 balance. The creditor has hired a large collection law firm, who claims they want the entire balance back, if not they will file for judgement and claim they will tack on about $2,000.00 worth of fees, is this possible?

They are not entitled to add $2000 to a credit card debt just because they want to. However, you have to fight any lawsuit that they file; they may have some basis for claiming this $2000 (is this for interest on the debt?)
You must fight them, or they could get a judgment for the extra $2000 on top of the $2500.

Re: credit card summons
It is possible and it may happen if you do not answer the complaint when one is filed. No judgment can be entered against you unless you are served with a summons and a copy of the complaint. When this happens, it is important that you take it seriously. Get a lawyer to file an answer and to appear for you if only to oppose any motion for excessive fees.
