Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

credit report/same name

My husband's sister recently obtained a credit report and it came back that she was $300 grand in debt. We have the same name and therefore the debt belongs to us. She now claims that she can't obtain a mortgage because of our debt. Question 1)- Is this possible?

It has become a family issue, extended family now know our problem and it is causing a rift. Is there anything I can do under the Invasion of Privacy Act? I believe that she is falsifying information to my in-laws and others stating that she can't obtain this mortgage due to our debt. Question 2)- Can I make her stop these allegations?

Any kind of help will be greatly apprecitated. Thank you!!

Re: credit report/same name

Get all credit reports for your family and sister-in-law. Go over every item that matches and then write a joint letter to the credit bureau.
