In NJ what is the statute of limitations on collecting a debt? I have been contacted on a debt from 1988.

You need to talk to a lawyer about this. The SOL is six years, BUT if you make payments on it, or acknowledge that you owe it or...a couple of other things will extend the time for the SOL to run out.
