Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

debt collection

I am being threatened with wage garnishment from a debt collector for over 5000.00 which I believe is an old debt and I am being charge interest along with attorney fees. They filed a judgment against me in court, now they want to garnish my pay 10 percent of my wages. I am an intermittent worker for the state and was furloughed in June, living on unemployment. In Feb. my rent will be 915.00 plus I pay all utilities, car ins. food, etc. (I live alone) I expect to return to work in Feb for 4-5 months but can't afford a garnishment. My car is a 1999 so I'm barely making ends meet. My health ins. will be cancelled Jan. 3rd because I didn't work enough hours. I take 3 blood pressure meds and 1 choles. that I won't be able to get. I don't know what to do and I need your help. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Helen

Re: debt collection

You should really get an attorney but you have no money to pay one. Have you tried legal aid?
