Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey
Debt Collectors After Authorized User Post Divorce
My ex husbandopened and individual credit card account with me as an authorized user. I was not a joint account holder because I had a bankruptcy and was unable to get credit. We have been divorced for 3 years. In that time he defaulted on the credit card. The collection agency mailed a notice to me stating that a judgement has been made against me for the debt, $6,200.00, in a New Jersey County Court. I was never served with any papers, and I am not a joint account holder. Can they do this. I also never resided in New Jersey, but my ex husband does.

Re: Debt Collectors After Authorized User Post Divorce
You should act quickly and contact a lawyer experienced in the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. From your post, it is likely that the agency and its lawyer violated the Act. As an example, you can only be sued where "you" signed the contract or where you currently live. Please feel free to contact me for additional info.
