Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

are gambling debts enforceable in NJ?

I have racked up over $10,000 in gambling debts on two separate credit cards. I reside in NJ so my question is are these debts enforceable in my state and will I have to pay them the money I owe? I keep receiving collection notices from the credit card company so how can I get them to stop.

Re: are gambling debts enforceable in NJ?

I looked into this a while ago for another client and came to the conclusion that the debt was not enforceable in NJ against her. There are a lot of variations depending how the gambling was done and the timing of the charges. The situation is heavily influenced by whether the credit card company has already paid the debt. In the case that I had, it had not and that is why the client didn't have to pay. Your situation may be different. Talk to your lawyer about the specifics.
