Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

late fees, interest, collection costs
My wife was taking online masters courses. She signed up for a spring 2006 course at Columbia. She realized her work load was too much and she tried to drop, making several attempts to contact professor and his asst.(have some emails)Prof delayed by saying he would help her, but that was not what she wanted. She stopped payment on tuition check, under impression professor did drop her.
We received a collection letter in Fall 2008 saying we owed $3600 in tuition, late fees, interest and collection costs. We had never been notified that she never was dropped by professor on time. The actual 50% tuition cost is $1700, all else is added on penalty. Again, there was no communication from Columbia for 2 and a half years.
What recourse or plan of action might I have to avoid some or all these costs?
