Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

Levy on a debt

My boyfriend apparently was a cosigner on his ex-wife's school loan about 10 yrs ago. She failed to pay it and I don't think she works because the collection agency has come after him. Is this because he owns a house and a car? Somehow or other, last month, they took the $3000 he had left in his checking account as he was about to pay his mortgage and an estimated payment to the IRS. I paid his mortgage. He is self-employed so I have been depositing his payments into my account and paying other bills. I really want to know if I could be culpable of some crime. Is it ok that he has been endorsing checks over to me? I would prefer he cash them outright and use money orders to pay bills, but I doubt his bank would cash them without him having money in the bank. I also suggested to him that he open a brokerage money market acct with check writing privileges and I want to know if the collection agency has the right to levy that as they seem to be able to do with a bank.
