Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

NJ Dishonored Check

My x husband titled a car in my name in New Jersey in 1996. He wrote a check for the vehicle in the amount of $525.00, the check bounced and NJ DMV is holding me responsible for it. I never had the car, and he signed the check! I have copies of it but they said since it was my license # and car registered to my name that it is my debt! Is that correct? They let him title it in my name without my consent!! Is there anything I can do? or do I just suck it up and pay it? Please advise..Thanks so much Lori

Re: NJ Dishonored Check

Sounds like an ID theft issue. I would be more than happy to help you, but you would probably wind up paying me more than you owe which doesn't make much sense. Thus, I would just try to explain this to them and see what you can do about it.
