Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

In Nov of 2006 I fired my lawyer for unsatisfactory services. I asked the lawyer several times for the amount that was left of my retainer. She was my lawyer from june 06 til nov 06. Not one time did she ever give me a statement of services performed and charges. It wasn\'t until she was fired that she gave me a packet of paper stating her work and fees. I have not heard or recieved anything from here until June 09. In her letter she states she sent several letters and left several messages. I called her last month and asked if I could make payments on the balance. She rejected my offer of 200 a month, saying it was unacceptable. Now she is sueing me for the 2400. Her secretary stated she wants a thousand down and 200 a month. I told her I could only come up with 500 down. I haven\'t heard anything since. I\'m a single mother struggling and cant afford to loose any more mony. Please help.

If you think that you have an issue with what you were charged and cannot get a good answer from your former lawyer, you may want to apply for fee arbitration. Even when there is a suit in court, the judge will frequently order the case into arbitration if you ask. Don't wait until the day of trial; ask now.

The arbitration panel will, among other things, review the charges and made a determination of whether they seem reasonable. The panel cannot give you a payment arrangement, but you might be able to work something out in parallel.
